5 May – 1 July 2001
A studio in Paris : Australian artists at the Cité Internationale des Arts 1967-2000, was an initiative of the S.H. Ervin Gallery which examined the rich history of the overseas studio residency scheme at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. The exhibition provided a historical overview of the creative output of a generation of Australian artists resident at the Cité. Fifty five artists from Sydney, regional New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland, contributed works in various media including paintings, works on paper, films, installations, sculptures, prints and photographs dating from 1967 to the present. All of the works were created during the artists’ residency at the Cité studios in Paris.
The Cité complex, picturesquely situated overlooking the Seine in the Marais district of Paris, houses over three hundred artist ateliers. There are several studios available for Australian visual artists, writers, musicians and designers which are administered by bodies such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia Council for the Arts, Power Institute (University of Sydney), College of Fine Arts (University of New South Wales) and the University of Tasmania. These studio residencies promote and encourage Australian artists through the provision of accommodation in Paris and the proximity to European art collections.
